The government is about to announce an extension to the 25-cent petrol tax cut and half price public transport, RNZ understands.

The subsidies were first introduced at the start of last year and were due to end on 31 March.

It will be the fourth time the government has extended the measures.

In December, Finance Minister Grant Robertson said "it wasn't sustainable to continue to subsidise the cost of petrol indefinitely for everyone".

It is not yet clear whether there will be any changes to the discount to road user charges, which ended on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins is due to make the announcement in Auckland this morning.
