A man, currently in hospital with gunshot wounds, has been charged following a violent confrontation on an Auckland motorway overbridge on Wednesday afternoon.

The 29-year-old, who allegedly tried to carjack a number of vehicles on the Lincoln Road overbridge, has been charged with multiple counts of presenting a firearm and aggravated robbery, police said on Thursday.

A hearing will take place at his bedside in hospital on Friday, they said, where he remains in a serious, but non-life-threatening condition.

According to police, he failed to stop when asked to around 3.20pm on Te Atatū Road. A chase ensued, ending in Henderson when he got out of the vehicle, tried to steal two others, got hit by one of them, then stole a truck.

He surrendered after being shot by police.

"There are several investigations that remain ongoing into the incident," said Waitematā district commander Superintendent Shanan Gray.

"Those are a Police Critical Incident, an Independent Police Conduct Authority Investigation, and a Coordinated Learning Review. As this matter is now before the court, police are limited in further comment."

The incident briefly disrupted traffic on the busy Northwestern Motorway.
