Police release name of woman who died during IronMāori competition in Napier

Police have named the woman who died during the IronMāori competition in Ahuriri, Napier, on 4 November.

She was 50-year-old Rachel Louise James, of South Head, Auckland.

A Coastguard spokesperson posted on Facebook at the time: "Our heartfelt condolences to the whānau of the competitor who passed away during the swim leg of the IronMāori.

"The local iwi are in the process of placing a rāhui on all water activities in the Napier area. Once we have more details we will let you know.

"In the interim as a sign of respect please refrain from swimming, fishing or boating in the area. Thank you for your understanding and support."

Police offered condolences to James's family and loved ones.

The woman's death has been referred to the coroner.
