Man knocked unconscious after trying to break up mass brawl

Hawke's Bay police are seeking witnesses to a New Year's Day brawl that left a man with facial injuries.

The fight involving between 20 to 30 people happened just after 12.40am in the carpark of a Newcastle Street hotel in Māhia.

A 34-year-old man trying to break up the fight was knocked unconscious and received facial injuries - putting him in hospital.

He has since been discharged.

Police said it was likely witnessed by a number of people and would like anyone with information or footage to come forward to them.
