A Kaikohe man has been arrested in relation to a shooting in the Northland town on Sunday.

Police were called to a Tawa Street address around noon after a man suffered a gunshot wound to one leg.

The offender is understood to have fled in a ute, while the victim was airlifted to Whangārei Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A 43-year-old man is due to appear in the Kaikohe District Court today, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful possession of a .22-calibre rifle, discharging a firearm, and assault.

The victim has since undergone surgery and been discharged from hospital.

A suspect connected to another shooting, less than 24 hours earlier at a rural property south of Kaikohe, has also been arrested.

In that case, police said the victim was shot in the neck and "very lucky" to have survived.

Police said the two incidents were not connected.

A 34-year-old man arrested in relation to the 3 February shooting appeared in the Kaikohe District Court on Monday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody and is due back in court by audio-visual link for a bail application on 13 February.
