The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic remain winless in the ANZ netball premiership after a 60-64 loss to defending champions the Southern Steel in Dunedin.
The injection of playmaking goal attack Olivia Bates late in the third quarter helped the Steel overcome an injury-plagued Magic.
With Samantha Sinclair making a rare appearance at wing attack, Magic's injury list was compounded late in the first quarter when goalkeeper Kelly Jury suffered a dislocated shoulder following a heavy fall forcing a major reshuffle of their lineup.
The Steel led at the end of the first quarter and at halftime but a resurgent Magic levelled the scores at 46-all heading into the final quarter but the Steel prevailed meaning the Magic have lost their two opening matches of the competition.
