Ko, playing in the fifth and final major of the year on the women's circuit, shot a one over par 72 in the opening round of the Evian Championship in France.

The 21-year-old carded four bogeys, a birdie and an eagle at the par fifth ninth.

Spain's Carlota Ciganda and Maria Torres from Puerto Rico lead the tournament after both shot six under around the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains.

On the men's European Tour, Ryan Fox shot a one under 70 to sit tied for 65th after round one at the KLM Open in The Netherlands.

Fox mixed two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine before coming home strongly with a string of birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

Fox is six shots behind China's Ashun Wu, who's the sole leader at seven under.

Wu's round was blemish free, carding seven birdies, including five on the back nine.

Fellow New Zealander, Josh Geary, is a further two shots back from Fox.

After starting the round with a bogey at the second, Geary made 12 consecutive pars before making a birdie at the par five 15th.

However Geary finished his round with a bogey to card a one over 72.
