Getting to host the Women's Rugby World Cup has been a long time coming but worth the wait, says Black Ferns captain Fiao'o Fa'amausili.

World Rugby voted in Dublin, awarding the tournament to New Zealand by 25 votes to 17, beating Australia for the honour.

It will be the first time the tournament has been held in the Southern Hemisphere, with matches to be played in Auckland and Whangārei.

The Black Ferns are in Grenoble preparing to play France this weekend and Fa'amausili says they followed the voting closely.

"Once we heard it was coming our way there were plenty of smiles. It's been a long time coming ... and we just can't wait to showcase New Zealand rugby - especially women's rugby - to the world," she said.

However Fa'amausili, 38, said hosting the event won't be enough to keep her playing as when the tournament comes around she will be 40.

"The World Cup being at home is special and I definitely want to be part of it but I won't be playing. I don't think my body will be up to playing ... there's one thing that certainly doesn't go down and that's age and I am pretty up there with the numbers.

"I am just happy the girls will be playing at home in front of their families in a massive event that showcases New Zealand."
