The big serving US star has been dumped out of the event with a straight sets loss to fellow American Taylor Fritz, 7-6 7-5, in their second round match in Auckland on Wednesday.

At 50th, Fritz is ranked 40 places below world number 10 Isner, who had a bye in the first round.

The 21-year-old will face a quarterfinal against the winner of Wednesday's match between Portugal's Joao Sousa and Cameron Norrie, an Auckland-raised player now based in England and playing under the Great Britain flag.

Fritz's upset win comes less than 24 hours after the sixth seed, South Korean world No 25 Hyeon Chung, was beaten in stunning fashion by New Zealand's Rubin Statham.

The home town player came from 5-1 down in the first set of that first round match to claim a 7-5 6-3 victory.

Isner was also the second seeded player to exit the tournament on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day the third seed, Italy's Marco Cecchinato, was beaten 6-3 6-3 by American player Tennys Sandgren.
