Walsh was a comfortable winner with a best of 21.70 metres, his second-to-last throw of the night.

He was nearly a metre clear of second-placed Aucklander Jacko Gill with 20.71m, with Poland's Konrad Bukowiecki third on 20.25m.

The 27-year-old Cantabrian's winning distance was down on his best of 22.67m, set nearly a year ago in Auckland, but continued a steady improvement as he looks to build for the northern summer.

Walsh last year won the world indoor title, Commonwealth Games gold and the prestigious Diamond League crown, and is now setting his sights on next year's Tokyo Olympics and an improvement on the bronze medal he won at the Rio Games in 2016.

He is also eyeing the world record of 23.12m, set in 1990 by American Randy Barnes.
