Radio Ngati Porou and Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti Centre of Excellence have taken the supreme accolades at this year's Maori language awards.

About 600 people attended the awards on Friday night, hosted by Te Taura Whiri I te Reo Maori in Gisborne.

The Maori language community award for long-term te reo revitalisation went to Te Ahurei o Tuhoe, while Dr Wharehuia Milroy received the Maori language individual award.

Radio Ngati Porou and Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti took out the Maori medium broadcasting award, as well as the supreme award for the year.

Radio Ngati Porou programme director Darylene Rogers says its winning entry, which it shares with Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, pertains to broadcasting the late Parekura Horomia's tangi.

A total of 16 awards were handed out to groups nationwide.
