Myths and legends generally develop slowly, but in the case of Shostakovich who died only a few decades ago, the half-truths and fabrications about his life and the meaning of his compositions are already so numerous that it’s difficult to know quite what he was writing about when he wrote his music.

His Symphony No 10 is introduced by Peter Watts.
