Rattle Records is now into its fourth decade, and its reason for being hasn’t changed much since the label was set up in 1991.

“It has developed and it’s broadened its reach,” says co-founder Steve Garden, “but the fundamental ethos, the motivation for the label is pretty much what it was from the start.”

“Our intention right at the get-go was to provide an empathetic platform for composers and performers who were working outside of the spheres that were at that time covered by the existing record labels. We specifically wanted to draw attention to the New Zealand art music: GitBox, From Scratch, Richard Nunns and Hirini Melbourne – those sorts of projects were the projects we kicked off with.”

“The shape of the label began to crystallise and we got a really good sense of where we wanted to go or where we could go.”

Steve talks with Bryan Crump about some of Rattle’s recent releases.
