Manus Island curfew unconstitutional - lawyer

From , 5:04 am on 11 July 2018

The lawyer representing Manus Island refugees says the night-time curfew imposed on his clients is a breach of their constitutional rights.

The 6pm to 6am curfew was enforced last month following the death of a local woman in a car crash.

Police say the car was being driven by a refugee who had been drinking and the curfew is to protect them from angry locals.

About 580 refugees remain exiled to the Papua New Guinea Island by Australia where they've allegedly been assaulted dozens of times by locals.

But the lawyer Ben Lomai told Ben Robinson Drawbridge the curfew has no legal basis.
