Prominent Papua New Guinea police officer, Anthony Wagambie Jr, has been sent to Bougainville as second in command there.

Mr Wagambie had been assistant commissioner in Port Moresby and was one of a number of senior police who faced a period of suspension after violent riots in the capital in January.

Several other senior Port Moresby officers have also been re-assigned out of the capital.

The PNG police commissioner, David Manning, says it's essential police have the right persons in roles that draw on their experience and capabilities.

RNZ Pacific's correspondent in PNG, Scott Waide told Don Wiseman many are unhappy with it.
