Bougainville is not about to sit idly by if the Papua New Guinea government continues to delay the tabling of their independence referendum.

The referendum, held in 2019, was to be tabled last year, but the government put it off.

It has been delayed further by the adjournment of parliament by prime minister James Marape to avoid a vote of no confidence.

Now Bougainville is looking at an alternative avenue to independence.

RNZ Pacific's Don Wiseman spoke with Bougainville's minister for independence implementation, Ezekiel Masatt, and began by asking if he knew when the referendum would be tabled.
