Generous gift for Te Herenga Waka from trailblazing scientist

From Afternoons, 1:15 pm on 9 February 2024

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington has been gifted 13 million dollars.

The donation came from the late Dr Aola Richards,  a trailblazing scientist and the first woman in New Zealand to gain a PhD in Biological Science.

She's nearly single-handedly responsible for identifying the various native wētā species, classifying new species, as well as cave crickets in Australia.

Professor Phil Lester from Te Herenga Waka School of Biological Sciences talks to Jesse about her legacy and how the money will be used.
