Covid-19: Level 2 rules - what you need to know

From Checkpoint, 5:11 pm on 7 May 2020

If level 2 gets the green light, hairdressers, restaurants, domestic travel, gyms, home cleaners and more are all go.

The Reserve Bank estimates the four-and-a-half-week lockdown under level 4 cost $10 billion in lost productivity, and if New Zealand is under level 3 restrictions for a similar amount of time it will cost us another $5 billion.

So for many businesses, getting open soon is the difference between economically surviving the pandemic or not.

But the new normal has new rules too. The maximum number of people for gatherings both inside and outside is 100.

For venues there is also what Jacinda Ardern calls the 'three S' rule: Seating for all guests, separation of customers, and a single server for each table.

Al Brown has three Auckland businesses - Depot, Federal Deli and Best Ugly Bagels. He is eager to open at level 2, but there is still some confusion about what single server means.

Hairdressers will have their work cut out for them when we get to level to 2, with a tidal wave of tresses and bad roots headed their way. They will also have to keep customers apart and wear masks.

And for the fitness fans among us, there is no more need for home workouts or pounding the pavement - gyms will be back open under level 2 too, with social distancing rules.
