Elderly residents of Waihi Beach in Bay of Plenty are in clean up mode after their homes were swamped with chest height water.
Up to 120mm of rain fell in two hours yesterday afternoon, overwhelming the storm water infrastructure.
About 27 people had to be evacuated from the worst hit area at the local block of pensioner housing.
