Electoral review recommends lowering voting age to 16

From Midday Report, 12:10 pm on 6 June 2023

A group campaigning to lower the voting age to 16 has been vindicated in the electoral system review.

The sweeping review into the country's electoral system is recommending the voting age be lowered to 16, a 3.5 per cent party threshold, and a public referendum on a longer Parliamentary term.

The interim report and recommendations will still to go through another round of public consultation before being handed to the Government in November.

But the advocacy group 'Make it 16' have long been fighting for young people to have the right to vote.

Most recently the Supreme Court ruled preventing 16 and 17 year olds from voting was unjustified age discrimination.
