Concerns over quality of probation reports

There are widespread concerns that probation officers are not writing good enough reports to help judges determine if someone should go to prison, or how long they should stay there. About 30,000 reports are written by probation officers each year - they're called Provision of Advice to Courts - and are supposed to tell a judge what they need to know before sentencing someone. The chair of the Criminal Justice Reform Advisory Chester Borrows told our Māori news correspondent Leigh-Marama McLachlan that nobody is happy with the standard of the reports.
