The national health agency Te Whatu Ora has been sending letters to cancer patients in the far south warning of long delays, despite claiming it was seeing most patients on time.

Te Whatu Ora told Morning Report on Monday it was treating 90 percent of southern cancer patients on time.

But recent letters warn newly-diagnosed patients they won't be seen for 12 weeks - triple the national target.

Te Whatu Ora missed a deadline on Tuesday this week to report back on how it has improved services.
