Climate scientists are blaming the ferocious gales that battered large parts of the country this week on the El Niño weather pattern joining forces with climate change in spring.
Meteorologist Tristan Meyer says the winds are indictive of El Niño becoming more intense due warming ocean temperatures and it's a precursor to a hot, dry and windy summer.
Meyer spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
