Teenagers have sat new NCEA literacy and numeracy tests for real for the first time and the results are not great.
Schools were able to opt into the assessments in June and pass rates in two of the tests were only a little above 50 percent.
The Education Ministry says 41,000 secondary school students, most of them in Year 10, took part.
