Wellington councillor urges new govt to sort out earthquake strengthening laws

A central Wellington city councillor is urging the new government to sort out earthquake strengthening laws, saying apartment and building owners are not a bottomless pit of money.

The call comes as the council demolishes a derelict and disused earthquake-prone heritage building after it caught on fire on Sunday and strengthening costs for the heritage-listed Town Hall blow out again.

Councillor Iona Pannett says it's not just heritage buildings caught up in costly quake-proofing - but any residential building with more than three units and two storeys.

Pannett spoke to Corin Dann.
