Fire crews remain at scene of fire in Kirwee, Canterbury

From Morning Report, 8:10 am on 8 January 2024

Two fire crews remain at the scene of a string of shrub fires which were threatening homes near the Canterbury town of Kirwee yesterday.

Seventeen Fire and Emergency crews, as well as the three helicopters, battled the blaze, which was caused by sparks from a freight train shunting milk wagons.

The fires have been contained and remaining crews are now just on site checking for hotspots.

Lydia Gliddon, a councillor for Selwyn's Malvern Ward, spoke to Charlotte Cook.
