A former Green MP says the increasing abuse aimed at women in high profile positions likely contributed to the stress that resulted in Golriz Ghahraman shoplifting.
Ms Ghahraman has resigned from Parliament after three allegations of shoplifting, admitting she acted out of character and is not well.
Green Party co-leader James Shaw says Ms Ghahraman was subject to continuous threats sexual and physical violence - and death - since the day she was elected to Parliament.
He says this has added a higher level of stress than is experienced by most members of Parliament.
