Forest and Bird urge Government to protect communities from future flooding

From Morning Report, 6:18 am on 12 February 2024

Forest and Bird is urging the Government to take the lead on protecting communities from future flooding.

More than 1400 new housing consents have been granted on Auckland's flood plains since the devastating floods a year ago.

Consultation has already taken place on the proposed National Policy Statement for Natural Hazard Decision-making which would require councils to consider risks such as floods or landslips, when making planning decisions.

Forest and Bird's freshwater advocate Tom Kay says councils need the new rules to protect them from legal action.

Kay spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
