Rats and mice found in supermarkets in Dunedin and Christchurch

From Morning Report, 7:46 am on 13 February 2024

Food Safety officers are on the ground at Countdown supermarkets in both Dunedin and Christchurch are trying to eradicate rats and mice spotted among the groceries.

The South Dunedin supermarket will remain closed on Tuesday, after pest controllers trapped close to 20 rats since Friday.

But the Countdown at Eastgate in Christchurch is staying open despite footage showing a mouse scurrying across uncovered salad in the deli.

These customers say it's not a good look and they're sticking to sealed items.

Woolworths says mouse entry points at the Christchurch store have been found and sealed; and a dead mouse was found the day after the mouse was spotted.

Woolworths has declined to come on the programme.

New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
