A Wairoa resident says his community has not lost, but gained, through the devastation of Cyclone Gabrielle.
Val Irwin - or Papa Val, as he is known to locals - joined the memorial hīkoi following the path the floodwaters took through Wairoa a year before.
Irwin told reporter Lauren Crimp why he was there.
