Central Wgtn roads to stay shut months longer than anticipated

Parts of central Wellington will remain at a standstill for months while authorities figure out how to stabilise a collapsed pipe.

A major sewerage pipe at the corner of Willis and Dixon streets caved in just days before Christmas and forced thousands of litres of sewage to spill into the harbour.

Crews scrambled to assemble a temporary fix, which involved closing off key roads. Those roads are poised to remain closed for months longer than first thought as the agency in charge, Wellington Water, seeks to sort out the best way of decommissioning the collapsed pipe and making sure the ground around it is stable.

At a public meeting last night residents and nearby local businesses vented their frustrations, about the length of time their streets would be out of action.

RNZ reporter Karoline Tuckey was at the meeting.
