Almost two years ago 19-year-old Alex Renton was given special approval to use medicinal cannabis.
He suffered from a condition that caused acute prolonged seizures and died after spending nearly three months at Wellington Hospital.
The approval sparked a nationwide debate and Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne who approved the use said it was a one-off and not setting a wider precedent - he has since delegated approvals to the Ministry of Health.
Alex Renton’s mother Rose Renton is petitioning Parliament to allow safe, affordable cannabis for medicinal use to be prescribed without special approval.
She appeared before the health committee this week and told them all people need is a sliver of brownie at night to give them relief.
