Alexander Zemlinsky was Austrian, born in 1871 and as a student in Vienna he was much influenced and supported by the old man Brahms. Brahms was very impressed by this Trio and sent it off to his own publishers with a recommendation.

Zemlinsky intended it primarily as a clarinet trio, but the published score includes a violin part to replace the clarinet. As Charlotte Wilson writes in her programme notes: “It’s the epitome of 1890s Vienna: lush, grand, romantic, impassioned.”
