Former RNZ presenter, actor and all round good-guy Lloyd Scott drops by to choose a few favourite tunes and tells us about new musical film Upstage.
Lloyd Scott is coming to the big screen tomorrow night in the world première of Upstage, a Kiwi made musical about a rehearsal going wrong.

The film won the best musical film at the 2018 Creation International Festival.
Lloyd plays the director in the film, written and musically directed by Michael Nicholas Williams. Lloyd is one of many friends cast in the production.
Tomorrow night’s screening is also a fundraiser, raising awareness and funds for HUHA and for the Bowel Cancer Trust.
Lloyd’s chosen five tunes that have reflected his theatrical life.
What is Youth from the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is one of Lloyd’s favourite Shakespearean stories. This one in particular brings back memories of when Lloyd worked as an usher in the late 60s at the Old Vic Theatre in London. He was able to rub shoulders with the likes of Laurence Olivier.
The Mikado Overture by Gilbert & Sullivan
Lloyd first brought The Mikado on LP in the 1950s and he would play the Overture and “conduct” along. He also played the Lord High Executioner in The Mikado twice. He was inspired by a high school teacher whom he saw play the role in Oamaru.
Where e’er You Walk by Handel
Lloyd first heard this piece on RNZ a few years ago. “I was knocked out by it! I haven’t heard it since. But you can see how it stuck with me,” he says. This piece is fromHandel’s ‘musical drama’ Semele.
The Sounds of Silence performed by Disturbed
While made famous by Simon and Garfunkel, Lloyd prefers this interpretation. “It takes your breath away,” he says. “The words didn’t mean that much to me until I heard [this version]. It’s ominous and liberating and wonderful to listen to.”
One more Angel in Heaven from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat
Lloyd was in a travelling production of the show written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He travelled to Singapore and Hong Kong and the show was meant to tour New Zealand. Alas they didn’t receive glowing reviews, but Lloyd enjoyed it anyway.
