This weekend Papua New Guinea is marking the 48th anniversary of its independence from Australia in 1975.

For the prime minister James Marape and police commissioner David Manning, the Friday public holiday has kept them busy, especially with a lengthy media sit down in Port Moresby where a wide range of issues were traversed by local journalists.

RNZ Pacific's Don Wiseman spoke with our PNG correspondent Scott Waide who says one of the first matters confronted by the prime minister was the circulating rumours about a threat of vote of no confidence as his administration completes its first 18 months in power.
