A Bougainville cabinet minister is calling for mining giant Rio Tinto to set "concrete commitments for remediation and clean up" of the Panguna mine.

Rio Tinto was the owner/operator of one of the world's largest copper and gold mines which has lain derelict for more than 30 years (closed 1989).

Periods of heavy rain leads to rivers being choked with mine tailings waste and reports of compromised eater supplies and food crops.

RNZ Pacific's Tiana Haxton spoke to Theonila Roka Matbob, the Minister for Community Government.
