Icebreaker founder enters pet food market

From Afternoons, 1:51 pm on 2 October 2020

The co-founder of sustainable clothing company Icebreaker is one of the people behind a newly released range of premium Kiwi-made pet foods.

Jeremy Moon tells Jesse Mulligan that Animals Like Us products fill a niche between low-grade supermarket pet food and the expensive stuff from pet stores.

Animals Like Us was founded by Moon, Craig Hickson, founder of Progressive Meats and Rob Achten, former VP of Icebreaker.

Currently, over 90 percent of the pet food sold in NZ supermarkets is made overseas from "goodness knows" by brands owned by big multinational companies, Moon says.

"There's this huge gulf between super cheap stuff which is dressed up as a really good brand … and then really good products which are really expensive."

Animals Like Us products are made with a blend of raw NZ meat and organs chopped up and freeze-dried and super high-protein dog biscuits.

The three varieties - Grass-fed Beef & Wagyu Beef heart, Cage-free Chicken & King Salmon and Grass-fed Lamb & Venison -are made with human-grade meat products, he says.

"The beef hearts are super high in omega 3 which a dog needs for fur and skin etc so we include that."

Animals Like Us sells for around NZ$23 per 1-kilo bag, which is expensive for some people but about half the price of premium pet food, Moon says. (For reference, his dog gets through about a bag a week).

The range is now available in North Island New World and Farro Fresh supermarkets. It will soon be available in the South Island, followed by Australia, then later China or the US.
