Closing Oranga Tamariki facility safest for children - acting CEO

From Checkpoint, 5:06 pm on 1 July 2021

Oranga Tamariki is shutting up its Christchurch secure facility after a video leaked this week showing a child there being tackled, restrained and held in a headlock.

A total of 60 staff have either been stood down or will be sent home on full pay, pending an investigation.

The 10 children in the facility will be rehoused. But it does not end there.

The agency's acting chief executive Sir Wira Gardiner is now focusing his attention on other facilities across the country, to make sure they are doing their jobs and keeping tamarki safe.
