A south Auckland tertiary institute is the focus of the government's first mass Covid-19 vaccination event.

Starting on July 30, the Vodafone events centre in will be ground zero for an immunisation blitz for students and staff from the Manukau Institute of Technology. Students are also invited to bring whānau.

MIT has been chosen because of its higher risk population and because it is close to the Airport and border.

Micah Sili is MIT's Student President. She's hoping a vaccination might mean her and her family can visit home again soon.

The goal is to vaccinate up to 15,000 people over the three day event.

MIT's Professor Martin Carroll says the big push to promote the vaccine to students starts today.

People are being encouraged to book in advance, and there will be limited capacity for any walk ups at the mass vaccination event.
