Anger at Auckland couple who fled lockdown for Wanaka

From Checkpoint, 5:24 pm on 13 September 2021

Otago locals are furious an Auckland couple flouted level 4 lockdown escaping Auckland for a family holiday home in Wanaka.

The 35-year old man and his 26 year old partner crossed Auckland's southern border at Mercer using essential worker exemptions to drive to Hamilton airport.

Checkpoint understands the couple told police they were using the exemptions to feed horses across the border.

The man in question, who has not yet been charged, hung up when Checkpoint called him earlier for an interview.

RNZ reporter Tess Brunton is in Wanaka.
