Commerce Minister monitoring Buy Now Pay Later schemes

From Checkpoint, 5:14 pm on 31 January 2024

The Commerce Minister's worried Buy Now Pay Later schemes are too easy to access when people are already in debt, but for now he's monitoring the situation.

A recent trend has seen people using the services to buy Prezzy cards and then use those to shop for essentials like groceries.

The likes of After Pay, Laybuy and ZipPay, allow people to buy good or services now, but pay for them later in a series of instalments over several weeks.

There's no interest but people can face penalties for defaulting on payments.

Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Andrew Bayly speaks to Lisa Owen.
