Large fire in Onehunga forcing evacuations

From Checkpoint, 5:07 pm on 7 February 2024

Evacuations are underway in an Auckland suburb, because of a massive fire in Onehunga.

Helicopters and more than 20 fire crews are dealing with the blaze at the Gorilla Waste facility.

Black smoke has been pumping into the air and residents far away from the scene can see and smell it.

The facility is also near State Highway 20 and the Manukau Harbour.

The council says the evacuations are mostly local businesses.

Reporter Louise Ternouth and camera operator Marika Khabazi are at the scene.
