More regulation needed for stone benches - Health and safety group

From Checkpoint, 4:45 pm on 20 March 2024

An industry health and safety group believes more regulation is needed to make working with potentially dangerous engineered stone benches safer but a total ban on products containing silica is unworkable.

A group of Doctors has written to the government urging it to follow in Australia's footsteps and outlaw the composite stone product that's popular in kitchen and bathroom ware.

Silica dust produced when the the benches are cut is proven to cause the lung disease Silicosis, as well as cancer, kidney and heart disease.

The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation is also backing a ban.
