The government is ramping up fines for vape retailers caught selling to under 18's.

However, Minister in charge has admitted there's only 15 enforcement officers policing thousands of stores nationwide and no money to pump-up their numbers.

As part of a crack down on youth vaping, it has increased the maximum fine for retailers selling regulated products to under age customers from $10,000 to a $100,000.

The penalty for individuals will go from $500 to $2000.

It's also investigating tighter regulations on storefront displays and keeping a regulation stopping new stores within 300 metres of kura or marae.

Associate Health Minister Casey Costello, speaks to Lisa Owen.
