Ōtepoti Dunedin’s Robert Scott is best known as a member of seminal New Zealand bands The Bats and The Clean, but more quietly he’s been painting for decades with work appearing in both exhibitions and on album covers. These days he also co-runs Port Chalmers gallery Pea Sea Art.
On Friday, an exhibition devoted to the art of Scott’s late Clean bandmate Hamish Kilgour, I Go Side On opened at Pūmanawa, The Arts Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
It’s a chance to remember the creative life of a much loved musician, who died in December 2022. Performances are happening throughout the exhibition with Chris Heazlewood, David Merritt and Bruce Russell playing on the 17 March 2pm (celebrating Kilgour’s birthday), Jay Clarkson on 23 March at 2pm and DJs on the final day, Sunday 3 March from 1pm.
Both Kilgour and Scott have created covers for many Flying Nun artists over the years, and Robert Scott is currently getting ready for his own first solo public gallery exhibition. Recover the land runs from 12 April to the end of June at the Forrester Gallery, Oamaru.
Fresh from playing the Port Noise festival in Lyttelton with The Bats, Robert Scott joins Mark Amery on RNZ’s Culture 101 to share some current favourite New Zealand artists.
