10:18 Independent review of electoral laws

New Zealand's electoral laws are under the microscope including the voting age, the parliamentary term and the 5% party vote threshold. Issues that are widely discussed issues before, during and dureclty after elections, but often get forgotten at other times. Today Justice Minister Kris Faafoi  announced the names of those who will be leading an independent review of electoral laws to "better support people to exercise their democratic right to vote".  Chairing the panel will be lawyer Deborah Hart who is currently chair of the Consumer Advocacy Council and the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand.

10:25 Investing for the future in wahine and rangatahi

How do you get economic security in difficult times?  According to Maori Development Minister Willie Jackson, it is by investing in wahine and rangatahi - women and young people.  $28.5 million over the next two years was announced in the Budget to strengthen whānau resilience through developing leadership within key cohorts of whānau leaders, wāhine and rangatahi Māori.
Willie Jackson explains how the money will fund development, leadership and programmes focussed on lifting the skills of wahine and rangatahi.

10:36 Making Video Content Accessible

A year 13 student from St Orans College in Upper Hutt has launched a campaign including an online petition for 'legal captioning standards' on media producers. New Zealand is currently one of the only countries in the OECD that doesn't legally require media producers to create closed captions. This means that a lot of video content, like news, tv shows, sporting events and movies can't be accessed by around 800,000 thousand Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. Hope Cotton is doing something about it.

10:45 Eat of the Week - Onion

To help you keep the cost of your kai down, each week we feature an item that represents great value and easy eating. This week is not the glamour-puss of produce - not by a long shot - but it knuckles down and does its job. This is the base - nay -  the very heart of the dish and if cooked well - sometimes you can't even really see it. The eat of the week is ONION.
The best buying we found is a kilo of loose brown onions for 99 cents. Tristan Balle is a 3rd generation onion grower and tells us about this pantry staple.
