Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard is set to be the first transgender athlete to compete at an Olympics after new qualifying criteria were released. Hubbard could be one of five New Zealanders to lift at the rescheduled Games in Tokyo, with her nomination and selection being confirmed over the next month. Hubbard's opponents protested her selection for the Commonwealth Games three years ago, even though the International Olympic Committee's guidelines mean a transgender athlete can compete as a woman provided their testosterone levels measure below a set level. Weightlifting New Zealand's high performance coach Simon Kent told Emma Hatton he expected a reaction if Olympic qualifying were confirmed.
