The UK government has given its first formal response to the new nerve agent poisonings near Salisbury in the south-west of England. British home secretary Sajid Javid has confirmed to parliament the novichok used in the latest nerve agent poisoning was the same as that used on a former Russian spy and his daughter earlier this year. Mr Javid says the Russian state needs to explain what it has been doing. Medical director of Public Health England Paul Cosford has urged the public in Salisbury area not to pick up unknown items.
