Hillmorton Hospital a frightening place to work - psychiatrist

From Morning Report, 7:11 am on 6 December 2018

A psychiatrist is warning that Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch can be a terrifying place to work and senior management should be held accountable for the appalling levels of violence against staff. Alma Rae worked at the hospital as a consultant psychiatrist for 27 years and resigned in 2015 because she didn't feel safe. Recent assaults at the hospital have included one nurse being stabbed, one attacked with boiling water and another strangled. This week the Canterbury District Health board said no level of violence towards staff or anyone else was acceptable, and a review is under way. It's also agreed to a Worksafe demand for a meeting which should happen on Thursday. Dr Alma Rae talks to Susie Ferguson.
