How did survivors brave Auckland Islands overnight?

From Morning Report, 8:42 am on 24 April 2019

The three men who survived a helicopter crash in the subantarctic ocean managed to survive in an extraordinarily inhospitable part of the world They were found on Tuesday morning on a beach on Auckland Island, about 450-kilometres south of New Zealand. They'd been on their way to medically evacuate a person from a fishing boat when they crashed. Gary Wilson is Professor of Marine Science at Otago University and is very familiar with the conditions the men faced.
